About

Just a few miles off the M6 motorway, The Green Village Music & Arts Festival is set in the remarkable parkland of Mount Druid in the village of Castletown Geoghegan, Co. Westmeath.

The Village Festival, a family orientated day out, will celebrate the best of Irish community with a one day programme of contemporary and traditional music, old time dance, poetry and literature as well as children's events. During this harvest period in September we feel it's an ideal time to also demonstrate traditional crafts and rural life. In addition we will be showcasing the best in local food all while spreading eco awareness among 200,000 native broadleaf trees.

The Village Festival will bring together local communities in a spirit of co-operation to work towards social and economic regeneration of the area, enable groups to show their work to the wider population and will create an independent and transparent fund to benefit local charities and community groups. .

History

The Táin is a legendary epic from Irish mythology which recounts the war between Queen Maeve of Connacht; her husband Aillil and the Ulster hero Cu Chulainn over a prize bull: the Donn Cuailgne. Legend holds that the final battle of this story took place not far from the village of Castletown Geoghegan in what is now County Westmeath.

The Village Festival is inspired by this tale and the fascinating ancient heritage of this part of Ireland which includes the Hill of Uisneach, residence of the High Kings of Ireland, and the picturesque Lough Ennell, the setting for Jonathan Swift's Lilliput from Gulliver's Travels.
